Fire Protection System

Fire protection systems connected to the public water system can contain antifreeze solutions, fomites or other chemicals use in firefighting.  Fire protection systems may also be connected to non-potable auxiliary water sources such a lake, ponds, rivers or water storage tanks. Fire protection systems include standpipe and hose system, and combined automatic sprinkler system and standpipes.  The difference between the two is that the standpipe and hose system does not have automatic sprinkler heads attached to the system risers whereas the automatic sprinkler system does.

Fire protection system can be categorized as wet firefighting systems with pressurized water from the public water distribution system in the fire protection piping system at all times or dry firefighting system with no pressurized water in the standpipe system.

Automatic sprinkler, and standpipe and hose fire protection systems may be equipped with the following:

  • Fire Pumps
  • Gravity Storage Tanks
