NFPA 2014

Section 13.6 Backflow Prevention Assemblies addresses the inspections of backflow prevention assemblies on fire protection systems.

Double Check Valve Assemblies – Section 13.6.1.1 requires the isolation valves on double check assemblies (DCV) and double check detector assemblies (DCDA) to be inspected weekly to ensure that the valves are in the normal open position. Section 13.6.1.1.1 requires the valves to be secured with locks or electrically supervised in accordance with applicable NFPA standards shall be inspected monthly.

Reduced Pressure Principle Assemblies – Section 13.6.1.2 The isolation valves on reduced pressure assemblies (RPA) and reduced pressure detector assemblies (RPDA) shall be inspected weekly to ensure that the valves are in the normal open position. Section 13.6.1.2.1 requires valves to be secured with locks or electrically supervised in accordance with applicable NFPA standards shall be inspected monthly. Pursuant to section 13.6.1.2.2, RPA and RPDA shall be inspected weekly to ensure that the differential sensing valve relief port is not continuously discharging.

An inspection by the property owner or designated representative shall be made to ensure that the fire protection system is in service, and all isolation valves are in the normal open position and properly locked or electrically supervised after any testing or repair section 13.6.1.3. Section 13.6.1.4 requires backflow prevention assemblies shall be inspected internally every 5 years to verity that all components operate correctly, move freely and are in good condition.

Testing – Section 13.6.2.1 requires all backflow preventers installed in fire protection system pipping to be exercised annually by conducting a forward flow test at a minimum flow rater of the system demand.

Maintenance – Section 13.6.3 requires the maintenance of all backflow prevention assemblies to be conducted by a qualified individual following the manufacturer’s instructions in accordance with the procedures and policies of the authority have jurisdiction.
