Fire Hydrant Backflow Prevention Device Assemblies with Meter – Installation

Potential cross-connection can be controlled by installing ASSE 1013 compliant backflow prevention device assemblies on fire hydrants when used for purposes other than firefighting. Some ASSE 1013 compliant backflow prevention device assemblies have built-in water meter. The backflow prevention device assembly with water meter (FHBM) measures potable water flow a fire hydrant while protection the public water system against backflow of non-potable water into the potable water system. The FHBM consists of a water meter and a ASSE 1013 compliant backflow prevention device assembly, threaded hose couplings, strainer on the inlet to the meter. The FHBM is connected directly to the fire hydrant typically with a 2 ½ inch – 7 ½ NST fire hose female swivel coupling. The FHBM shall be a ASSE 1013 compliant backflow prevention device assembly because it is assumed that the connection to the fire hydrant will be a high hazard cross-connection. The FHBM shall be supported with to prevent damage or operational problems. The ASSE 1013 compliant backflow prevention device assembly shall be tested before and after each use period to determine if it is operating properly. The flow rate range is between 2 – 30 gpm. The maximum operating pressure is 150 psi and the pressure loss at 30 gpm is around 11.0 psi. Consult manufacture literature for further information regarding operational specifications.
