Freeze Protection Valves

The freeze protection valve (FPV) protects backflow preventers from freezing when installed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. The internal parts of the freeze protection valve are replaceable. During normal operations the freeze protection valve is drip tight when the temperature is above freezing. The freeze protection valve is rated for operating pressure of 20 to 175 psi. The freeze protection valve will start to open when the temperature is 35 degrees F. The freeze protection valve is normally installed on test cock number four. The test cock must be left in the open position to allow the FPV to function properly. The FPV is best suited to be installed in the vertical down position, but may also be installed at any orientation up to horizontal. Orientations above horizontal may cause an ice dam during operation and impair valve function. Under freezing conditions, the FPV will discharge water from the outlet port. Provisions must be made to insure that discharge will not damage surrounding property or equipment. The FPV is not intended to replace the standard winterizing process as recommended by the manufacturers.Backflow prevention device assemblies must be protected against freezing for the winter in areas where freezing temperatures may occur.
